Presenting and Public Speaking
Being in front of an audience of
200 people doesn’t scare me!
“I have been lucky enough to create stories for an audience that I can’t see (radio and podcasts) and one that’s staring directly at me — while I’m performing or speaking on stage.”
An awareness of audience
Over the course of my career, I have been invited to participate in public speaking and panel moderating opportunities at events around New Zealand, including New Zealand Fashion Week (Auckland), ID fashion Week (Dunedin), and Creative New Zealand (Auckland).
In 2020, I moderated a panel of entrepreneurs and economists from Australia and New Zealand. The event was web-streamed live by Auckland agency, Pocket Square, just as Covid -19 and lock down hit New Zealand. The focus of the discussion: ‘The Future of Commerce’ looked at online businesses and bricks and mortar retail. In this scenario, it was important not only to address the issues, but also to direct the momentum of the discussion in a digital space where ‘performance, energy and narrative’ are vital and a means to keeping viewers engaged.
I have also been invited as a speaker on cultural diversity panels including ‘Going Bananas: Being Chinese in New Zealand,’ and a Creative New Zealand panel on Diversity in the Arts. As well as speaking to my theatre work and my solo show, the Wholly Grain, which was picked up as part of the Asian studies curriculum at Auckland University.
Having worked in the media, I am a long-time trusted ‘arts reviewer/ reporter’ who has been on the other side of the microphone. I have been interviewed on RNZ live-to-air programmes, ‘Sunday Morning with Wallace Chapman,’ Standing Room Only, Nights with Bryan Crump and Morning Report, discussing arts and culture events and issues.
As a result of my theatre work, I have also featured on television programmes Nightline, TV One’s Good Morning, Asia Down Under.
“Sonia was a fantastic host and moderator of our Future of Commerce Webinar that we hosted digitally in the heart of our first COVID19 lockdown. She expertly moderated and directed our 6 panelists through a range of topics, pressing for more information where possible, and moving the conversation on as required. The panel and attendees all had a great time."
